The 3rd Mystery of Light – The Preaching of the Kingdom of God and repentance and forgiveness of sins – a reflection.

The Feeding of the Multitudes
Over the past two weeks I have been giving a Bible Study to our Youth Ministry class. The verses sighted below were among the topics we discussed. I also found that a good audio Bible recording is a great tool for teaching Sacred Scripture. As Catholics we hear a lot of the Bible read every week, but rarely do we sit down and read from beginning to end. Try this for a Bible Study; Listen and follow along to about three chapters of an Audio Bible recording (For example, Mark’s Gospel). Then pray a decade of the Rosary reflecting on highlights from that reading or from the gospel as a whole. In praying the Sacred Scriptures in the Rosary we can deepen our devotional time and become more familiar with the sacred page. The following are verses from the Gospel According to Mark.

The Gospel According to Mark

Our Father . . .

1. The Heavens opened
1:10-11 - And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.”

Hail Mary . . .

2. The Curtain in the Jerusalem Temple torn
15:37-38 - And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

Hail Mary . . .

3. The Confession of Peter
8:29 – And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”

Hail Mary . . .

4. The Confession of the Gentile (Roman Centurion)
15:39- And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

Hail Mary . . .

5. Feeding of the 5000 (12 baskets collected)
6:41 – And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to set before the people; . .

Hail Mary . . .

6. Feeding of the 4000 (7 baskets collected)
8:6- And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; . . .

Hail Mary . . .

7. The Last Supper
14:22- And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take, this is my body.”

Hail Mary . . .

Jesus Predicts his Suffering, Death and Resurrection

8.
8:31 – And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Hail Mary . . .

9.
9:31 – “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.”

Hail Mary . . .

10.
10:33-34- “Behold, we are going to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.”

Glory Be . . .

O My Jesus . . .

Ave Maria!
Praise be Jesus Christ!

So let us abide in Christ and let Christ be formed in us.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “Meditation engages thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. This mobilization of faculties is necessary in order to deepen our convictions of faith, prompt the conversion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ.” The prayer of the rosary helps us to reflect on the mysteries of Christ. “This form of prayerful reflection is of great value, but Christian prayer should go further: to the knowledge of the love of the Lord Jesus, to union with him.” (CCC 2708)

When we contemplate these mysteries we fix our gaze of faith on Jesus. St. John Vianney reflected that, “I look at him and he looks at me” (CCC 2715). Let us sit at the school of Mary and contemplate the beauty of the face of Christ and experience the depths of his love (Pope John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, Pauline Books & Media, Boston, p. 8). “To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ (JPII, p. 10). The apostle John wrote in his letter, “Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child (1 Jn. 5:1). In John’s gospel Jesus from the cross says to his mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home (John 19:26-27).

Let us say with the cousin of Mary and the mother of John the Baptist, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Luke 1:42). For truly all generations will call her blessed and that includes us.

Ave Maria!
Praise be Jesus Christ!

Study the Sacred Scriptures using the Rosary

The term “Scriptural Rosary” may seem a bit redundant. The Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be along with each of the mysteries are based in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and we rehearse important aspects of our faith each time we recite this wonderful prayer. As we enter into Holy Week, let us walk through the events leading up to the Passion of our Lord and His glorious resurrection. This will be a decade by decade reflection.

The following verses are from the Revised Standard Version – Catholic Edition.

The First Sorrowful Mystery – The Agony in the Garden
The Gospel According to Matthew 26:31-56

You will all fall away because of me
31
Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me this night; for it is written,
`I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
32
But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."

Our Father . . .

Jesus Predicts Peter’s denial (“you will deny me 3 times”)
33
Peter declared to him, "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away."
34
Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will
deny me three times."
35
Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you." And so said all
the disciples.

1. Hail Mary . . .

A Man of Sorrow and Acquainted with Grief
36
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsem'ane, and he said to his disciples,
"Sit here, while I go yonder and pray."
37
And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zeb'edee, he began to be sorrowful
and troubled.
38
Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and
watch with me."

2. Hail Mary . . .

Jesus Prays the 1st Time
39
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "My Father, if it be possible,
let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt."
40
And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could
you not watch with me one hour?
41
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but
the flesh is weak."

3. Hail Mary . . .

Jesus Prays the 2nd Time
42
Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass
unless I drink it, thy will be done."
43
And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

4. Hail Mary . . .

Jesus Prays the 3rd Time
44
So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying
the same words.
45
Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking
your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the
hands of sinners.
46
Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

5. Hail Mary . . .

The Crowd expected violence
47
While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great
crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
48
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him."

6. Hail Mary . . .

Judas . . . Why are you here?
49
And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Hail, Master!" And he kissed him.
50
Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they came up and laid hands
on Jesus and seized him.

7. Hail Mary . . .

Put away your sword
51
And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew
his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52
Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take
the sword will perish by the sword.

8. Hail Mary . . .

Born the King of Angels
53
Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me
more than twelve legions of angels?
54
But how then should the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?"

9. Hail Mary . . .

Whom did you go out to see?
55
At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out as against a robber,
with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching,
and you did not seize me.
56
But all this has taken place, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled."
Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.

10. Hail Mary . . .

Glory Be . . .

O My Jesus . . .
